Paying for care

How to Pay for Senior In-Home Care

Cost is one of the first questions families ask, and it should never be confusing. Most families use one or more of the options below.

1

Private pay

Many families pay directly, using savings, retirement income, or help from relatives. Private pay gives you the most flexibility to choose the days, hours, and kind of help your loved one needs.

2

Long-term care insurance

Many long-term care insurance policies help cover care at home. Policies differ in what they cover, when benefits begin, and what paperwork they require, so check with your insurance company first. We can help you understand what to ask.

3

Veterans benefits

Veterans and surviving spouses who qualify may be able to receive VA benefits, such as Aid and Attendance, that help pay for in-home care. Supporting veterans is part of why we started Chosen1 Services, and we can help you find out where to start.

4

Arizona Medicaid (AHCCCS and ALTCS)

The Arizona Medicaid program, AHCCCS, and its long-term care program, ALTCS, can pay for some in-home services for people who qualify medically and financially. Eligibility rules and approved providers vary, so ask us what we can and cannot do under your plan.

What about Medicare?

Medicare generally does not pay for non-medical help at home, such as bathing, meals, errands, and companionship. It may cover limited home health care that a doctor orders after an illness or hospital stay.
